Swift River Hydro
Operations Company Inc. and D. Hobbs Contracting Services
- Operations and Maintenance
-
- Swift River has a 16 year track record of hydro operations and maintenance.
In February 2001 formed Swift River Hydro Operations
Company (SRHOCO) to operate its hydro projects and in
September 2001 merged with D. Hobbs Contracting,
Inc. to establish a work shop for overhaul of
heavy machinery, to have a mobile maintenance capability to work on sites all over New
England and New York State. Rigging equipment, cranes, backhoes are available for
heavy repairs and rehabilitation. William K. Fay,
President of SRHOCO, is a hydro engineer licensed to design hydro
facilities in all the states of the region. He is also FERC-approved for
part 12 inspections and has made dam inspections for many of the state
agencies in the region. Kenneth
Smith, also a licensed engineer and General Manager of SRHOCO, brings the operating philosophy
and experience to automate each
site. Production efficiency and availability increase at automated sites and the
mobile operations and maintenance crew are able to
efficiently service units more effectively when they
have remote sensing and continuous monitoring.
-
- Purchase and Rehabilitate Projects
-
- Swift River Hydro Operations Company have
a mandate to buy or lease existing sites so that
they can be rehabilitated and put back into condition for long-term sustained
generation. Throughout New England there are
hydro facilities that have been forgotten or are being
decommissioned because the owner's business is
changing or been shutdown. Such is the case
with the paper industry that used to dominate the New England region.
SRHOCO is looking to opportunities to buy existing hydro power assets that have licenses or can
be licensed. SRHOCO will raise the capital for
rehabilitation, provide the engineering design and carry out the construction
work and repairs necessary to put the plant back on line. This rehab program
can be undertaken in partnership of the existing owners or after leasing or
after SRHOCO has acquired the facilities.

- Energy Sales
-
- Swift River projects currently sell energy to Commonwealth Electric Company
(ComElec), Western Massachusetts Electric Company (WMECO) and to Bangor Hydro Electric Company (BHE). In the past, Swift River hydro
projects have sold power to Massachusetts Electric Company (Mass Electric), New England
Power Company (NEPCO), New Hampshire Public Service Company (PSNH), and Central Maine
Power Company (CMP). In today's market, most of these companies have sold these
contracts to new wholesale power aggregator.
They have become distribution companies that no
longer generate or purchase energy from small power producers. This leaves open the
many municipal electric companies in New England who also have a requirement to purchase a
certain percentage of their energy from "green energy" sources
and private industrial customers close to the generating sites.
-
Green Energy
Certificates
- Swift River has registered it hydro
projects so that it will be able to sell
green energy certificates to distributors who must meet
Renewable Portfolio Standards (RPS) by showing that a
required percentage of its energy mix is generated by green energy resources.
